Rescuers dug through rubble in Beirut as the caretaker prime minister implored the United Nations to adopt a resolution calling for an “immediate” truce between Israel and Hezbollah.
It was the latest attempt by Najib Mikati’s embattled government to bring an end to the violence that has killed thousands and displaced nearly one million.
Two Israeli officials described the attack as an attempt to assassinate a Hezbollah official involved in weapons smuggling. It came as Israel continued to press its campaign in Lebanon against Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy.
